1. Diet is paramount to long-lasting weight loss!

Losing weight and reaching your optimal weight cannot be accomplished without an adequate, controlled diet. It is widely accepted that 80% of weight loss can be attributed to a healthy, balanced diet, while 20% can be attributed to medications and exercise. No diet alone is a holy grail to weight loss. In the past decade, many fad diets, like the South-Beach diet, Atkins Diet, and Keto Diet have been popularized, particularly ones that are low carb. While they may work for some individuals, dieticians and nutritionists alike, agree that a more balanced approach to diet is the key to long-lasting weight control. Carbs are necessary for energy and when we starve our bodies of carbs long-term, our bodies adapt, slow their metabolisms, and can go into “starvation mode”, where our bodies start to conserve energy by reducing the number of calories it burns, leading to symptoms such as laziness, fatigue, increased appetite, and increase in food cravings. All of that is counter to weight loss, in general.

Patients who are committed to proper weight loss should limit non-nutritious food such as sugar, artificial flavoring, soda, and alcoholic beverages. Patients should also cut-down on high-fat and processed foods like bacon, chips, saturated butter, and fried foods.

It is best for patients to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, turkey and fish, and whole grains. Changing your eating habit may also help promote proper weight loss.

2. Proper Exercise and Other Physical Activities

Exercising, whether light or strenuous, is an essential part of having a healthy body and lifestyle. Whether it is a 30-minute walk or job daily, intense training (HIIT), and/or weight training, some variation of exercise will help control your weight.
